Dexis is the dental-imaging brand under Envista Holdings (NYSE: NVST). The Dexis intraoral scanner line traces back to the Carestream Dental CS 3xxx series — when Envista acquired Carestream Dental's imaging business in 2022, the CS 3xxx scanners were rebranded under the Dexis flag and the line has continued to evolve. The big news for 2025 is the new DEXIS Imprevo, Dexis's first ground-up scanner under the Envista flag.

Dexis is part of a publicly-traded global dental products conglomerate. Envista's portfolio spans implants (Nobel Biocare, Implant Direct), orthodontics (Ormco / Spark), and equipment (KaVo, Dexis). The IOS scanner line specifically traces back to the Carestream Dental CS 3500 / 3600 / 3700 / 3800 family that Envista acquired in 2022 — these scanners were renamed under the Dexis IS 3xxx branding. What's different about Imprevo
The Imprevo is the first IOS that Dexis has developed end-to-end since absorbing the Carestream Dental imaging business in 2022 — it's a generational change, not a rebrand. Per Dexis's product page, the key specs are:
What Dexis claims is unique about Imprevo:
- Dual-sensor optical engine. Laser-precision sensor combined with white-LED illumination — Dexis positions this as producing "ultra-detailed images that are more realistic than ever."
- Parallel-processing architecture. The 40 FPS frame rate, per Dexis, drives both faster scans and "increased data density of the final mesh."
- Deep DOF. 25 mm depth of field is targeted at "deep preps and tight interproximal spaces" — most existing IOS scanners are in the 15–22 mm range.
- AI-assisted accuracy. "Advanced scanning algorithms mean you get faster scans, fewer rescans and more accurate impressions."
- Hardware refinement. Autoclavable, universal tip; 20% slimmer body; LED status ring on the wand; gesture-based smart control to rotate the on-screen model without touching the computer.
- IS ScanFlow v2.0. Imprevo ships with the v2.0 of Dexis's scanner software — direct DTX Studio Clinic integration, simplified Rx, exocad integration, SprintRay 3D-printer direct send, and DEXIS IS Connect Cloud sharing.

Beyond the Imprevo-specific claims above, here are Dexis's published positioning points for the IOS line as a whole. We list them as Dexis presents them — 3DL has not independently benchmarked any of these claims.
- Open system. IS ScanFlow exports clean STL files. Dexis explicitly positions itself as not requiring proprietary cloud routing — practices can keep their existing lab relationships and any STL-accepting workflow.
- 3D-print integration. Direct integration with SprintRay for in-office printing; standard STL export to any other 3D printer.
- DTX Studio Clinic integration. Overlay scans from different visits to visualize erosion / wear / recession progression; combine IOS, 2D images, and CBCT for treatment planning — pitched as a chair-side patient-acceptance tool.

FDA & Regulatory Status
Dexis intraoral scanners are regulated by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration as Class II medical devices under product code NOF ("System, Optical Impression, Computer Assisted Design and Manufacturing of Dental Restorations"), regulation 872.3661.
Our openFDA search did not surface a 510(k) clearance directly under "Dexis" or "Envista" for the Imprevo or IS 3800 family. The IS 3800 lineage predates the Dexis rebrand and was originally cleared under Carestream Dental / its predecessor entities; the Imprevo is new enough that its 510(k) may not yet be indexed in openFDA. Dexis's Establishment Registration is held under Envista's Dental Imaging Technologies Corporation subsidiary. U.S. clinicians evaluating a Dexis purchase should ask their Dexis rep to provide the specific 510(k) number applicable to the configuration they're buying, and verify it in the FDA's public 510(k) database before committing.
Cloud Storage & Data Residency (IS Connect Cloud)
Dexis scanners write to DEXIS IS Connect Cloud (formerly the Carestream Cloud Sharing service before the Dexis rebrand). Per Dexis's published documentation, practitioners can view and share IOS scans from any web browser.
Where Patient Data is Stored
Envista's published Privacy Notice acknowledges international data transfer and identifies legal mechanisms for cross-border transfers (Standard Contractual Clauses and similar frameworks). Envista does not publish a public per-region data-residency table — practices needing a specific data-center disclosure should request it from Dexis in writing before signing.
Compliance Status
- GDPR — applies via Envista's EU operations; Standard Contractual Clauses used for EEA transfers.
- US state privacy laws — Envista's Privacy Notice addresses California (CCPA / CPRA) and the broader US state privacy landscape.
- HIPAA — Envista's public Privacy Notice does not explicitly publish a HIPAA Business Associate Agreement covering DEXIS IS Connect Cloud. Practices needing a BAA before storing identifiable PHI in the Dexis cloud should request one from Dexis directly.
