SmartShape® Healing Abutments
BioHorizons's anatomically contoured healing abutment line — a single titanium component that doubles as a healer and a scannable impression abutment, replacing the traditional cylindrical healer with site-specific tooth-form emergence profiles.
SmartShape Healers are anatomically contoured, single-stage healing abutments machined from titanium alloy that double as scannable impression abutments. Rather than the traditional cylindrical healing cap, each healer presents a tooth-form emergence profile (anterior, mid, or posterior) that simultaneously shapes peri-implant soft tissue during osseointegration and serves as a digital or analog impression body. A matching VulcanDental library lets the lab design the final crown to the exact emergence profile sculpted by the healer — preserving the soft-tissue contour from healing through delivery.
The Clinical Problem
Cylindrical healers create a round emergence that does not reflect the natural cervical cross-section of an anterior, premolar, or molar tooth, so the soft tissue is recontoured at impression and again at delivery — collapsing the papillae and producing a "pop-out" emergence.
What SmartShape Solves
The gingiva is shaped to a tooth-anatomic profile during healing, then that exact profile is transferred to the lab via scan or closed-tray impression. No recontouring step, fewer components, less chairtime, and a profile-matched final restoration on day one.
Six Anatomic Emergence Profiles
Each platform diameter is available in six tooth-form profiles, plus a tall-height variant for thicker soft tissue:
Place → Impress → Design → Deliver
The four-step SmartShape workflow eliminates the second component swap that disrupts soft tissue:
- Place — Seat the SmartShape Healer at second-stage uncovery (or at implant placement when single-stage). Position so approximately 0.5 mm of the abutment sits above the soft tissue to leave a scannable margin.
- Impress — After tissue maturation, take an impression directly off the healer using either an intraoral digital scanner or a traditional closed-tray technique. The healer doubles as the impression coping; no separate transfer is placed.
- Design — 3DL designs the custom final restoration using the matching SmartShape VulcanDental CAD library, keyed to each A/M/P profile and platform.
- Deliver — Final restoration arrives with the crown's subgingival emergence already matched to the tissue contour shaped by the healer. No recontouring at try-in.
Compatible Platforms
- Internal Hex (BioHorizons tri-channel internal hex connection) — 3.0 mm (gray), 3.5 mm (yellow), 4.5 mm (green), 5.7 mm (blue). Covers Tapered Internal, Tapered Internal Plus, Tapered Tissue Level, Tapered 3.0, and other Internal Hex implants.
- Tapered Pro Conical — Narrow Platform and Regular Platform variants, with Regular and Tall heights.
Key Advantages
- Anatomic emergence contouring during healing — no recontouring at delivery.
- Single component serves as healer + scan body / impression coping → fewer parts, less chairtime.
- Site-specific A / M / P profiles match anterior, premolar, and molar cross-sections.
- Native digital workflow via VulcanDental library files; closed-tray analog also supported.
- Available across the full Internal Hex platform range (3.0–5.7 mm) plus Tapered Pro Conical.
- Tall variants accommodate deeper soft-tissue thicknesses.
- Occlusal markings on the abutment top aid orientation and identification.

Snap Scan Body — Why 3DL Recommends Against It
BioHorizons also publishes a one-piece PEEK Snap Scan Body. 3DL does not use it for digital impression cases — here's why.
3DL does not recommend the Snap Scan Body for digital impression cases. While Snap Scan Bodies are convenient (one-piece, hand-placed, no driver required), the friction-fit retention and PEEK-only construction introduces seating-position variability that can affect scan accuracy and final restoration fit. For BioHorizons digital cases we prefer the Titanium Scan Body or — when emergence profile shaping is part of the workflow — the SmartShape Healers above.
What It Is
The BioHorizons Snap Scan Body is a one-piece PEEK component that is friction-seated by hand onto the implant prosthetic platform — no driver, no retention screw. Color-coded by platform diameter (3.0 / 3.5 / 4.5 / 5.7 mm) and available in two heights (8 mm and 11 mm).
Why 3DL Recommends Against It
- Friction-fit seating variability — without a retention screw, the Snap can rock or slightly mis-seat under intraoral scanning conditions, introducing position error.
- PEEK-only construction — no titanium reference surface for verified scan capture; some IOS systems struggle with all-PEEK geometries.
- Limited torque verification — there is no torque spec because there is no screw, so seating cannot be confirmed objectively.
- Better alternatives exist — the standard Titanium Scan Body (Ti-base + screw retention) or the SmartShape Healer (anatomic + scannable in one) provide more predictable results in the 3DL workflow.

Final Torque Values
⚠️ Manufacturer-published torque specifications for clinical reference. Always verify against the current IFU before clinical use.
| Component | Torque |
|---|---|
| Final abutment screw | 30 Ncm |
| Healing abutment | hand-tight |
| Multi-unit abutment screw | 30 Ncm |
| Prosthetic screw | 15 Ncm |
30 Ncm applies across Tapered Internal, Tapered Plus, Tapered Pro, and Tapered Pro Conical. Driver: .050" / 1.25 mm hex.

Clinical Notes & Considerations
- Platforms 3.0/3.5/4.5/5.7 mm are color-coded gray/yellow/green/blue — useful for chairside identification but the scan body SKU determines library mapping.
- Snap Scan Body is one-piece and hand-placed (no driver); the 11 mm height is preferred for posterior cases with tall soft tissue cuffs.
- Tapered Internal, Tapered Plus, and Tapered Pro all share the BioHorizons internal hex platform-by-diameter — same scan body family at matching diameter.
- 3.0 mm (one-piece) is a separate platform — TP3* scan bodies only fit 3.0 mm prosthetic interfaces.
- Tapered Pro and Tapered Pro Conical share the BioHorizons platform diameters (3.0 / 3.5 / 4.5 / 5.7) but have DIFFERENT prosthetic interfaces — Tapered Pro uses the internal-hex platform-shared prosthetics; Tapered Pro Conical uses a dedicated conical connection with its own scan body and abutment family. Verify which Pro variant is in place before ordering components.
3DL Workflow for BioHorizons Cases
- Identify the component before submission. Call (248) 919-7929 or message through the doctor portal — 3DL verifies the BioHorizons implant line, platform diameter, and the correct scan body family at no charge.
- Scan with any major IOS. Upload the scan through the doctor portal. 3DL confirms receipt the same day and validates the scan body capture before any milling begins.
- 3DL designs in matched pairs. Custom abutment and final crown are designed together so the emergence profile of the abutment supports the crown's gingival contour exactly.
- Mill, finish, ship. Custom titanium or zirconia abutment plus final crown ship together in 7 to 10 business days. Verification jig included on request.
